Biden Claims He “Never Made” More Than $400K – But In 2 Years After Obama, He Made $15.6M

It’s important for any politician to support blue-collar workers. After all, those workers are the backbone of the country and represent millions of votes in elections.

That’s why presidential hopeful Joe Biden likes to portray himself as “Middle Class Joe” and typically tries to cater to the “lunch bucket” demographic.

However, that can be difficult to do when one is worth millions.

Biden sat with four steelworkers in Detroit this week and tried to convince them he was on their side.

Perhaps above all else, he specifically mentioned that those who make less than $400,000 a year won’t pay more taxes if he’s in the White House:

Every single thing I talk about, I pay for, by making sure, for the first time, the wealthy begin to pay what they should be paying. We’re not going to punish anybody.

No one making under $400,000, which is more money than I’ve ever made, is going to have to pay more taxes.

That’s a strong statement and could undoubtedly make Biden some friends. Nobody who isn’t wealthy wants higher taxes.

But saying that $400K is “more money than I’ve ever made” is misleading at the very least. One could argue that it’s downright false, in fact.

In 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Bidens had pulled in a whopping $15.6 million in the first two years after Joe left the White House.

It was his book deal, speaking engagements, and “other income” that greatly increased Joe’s income.

The book deal alone was worth $8 million, and the speaking fees came to another $3.1 million, per the Washington Post. Another point from that report:

The Post found at least 65 instances in which Biden gave a speech or appeared at a book event; in at least 10 instances he did not take a fee, although in some of those cases he was reimbursed for travel expenses.

Biden’s campaign said he has given less than 50 paid speeches, but it declined to be more specific about how many he delivered or how much he earned in total.

And just last year, the Bidens were estimated to be worth around $9 million.

Now, Joe might’ve been referring to a base salary when he said he never made more than $400,000. But he certainly wasn’t specific about that.

And it will likely annoy blue-collar workers when you make that claim, and they all know he’s worth many millions.

Your base salary doesn’t account for your total income, of course, and Joe Biden has never really been hurting for money. As such, the “Middle Class Joe” moniker can be tough to swallow.

Key Takeaways:

  • Joe Biden told steelworkers in Detroit he’d “never made more than $400,000” a year.
  • But with his book deal, speaking fees, and other income, Biden has in fact earned many millions. The book deal alone was worth $8 million.
  • With such wealth, it might be difficult for Biden to sway blue-collar workers.
